The San Francisco 49ers face a new challenge as training camp approaches. Jauan Jennings wants a contract extension or a trade, according to multiple reports.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter broke the news on social media. Jennings is scheduled to make $7.5 million this season in the final year of his current deal. The 49ers extended his contract last year, but that hasn’t changed how Jennings feels about his situation.
The wide receiver has emerged as one of San Francisco’s top offensive weapons.
Jennings made history in Super Bowl LVIII. He became just the second player in NFL history to record both a passing and receiving touchdown in the Super Bowl. If the 49ers had won that game, he could’ve easily taken home MVP honors.
Most analysts expect the 49ers to meet his contract demands. The team’s depth at wide receiver remains a concern, especially with questions surrounding Brandon Aiyuk’s recovery status.
“I expect something similar will play out with Jennings. He probably will get a modest pay raise just before the first padded practice of training camp. Because the 49ers can’t afford to trade him until they know Brandon Aiyuk has made a full recovery. And that process could take a year or two.”
That’s according to Sports Illustrated’s Grant Cohn.
If San Francisco decides to move him, the Tennessee Titans emerge as a logical destination.
USA Today’s Tom Viera highlighted the connection. Jennings played five college seasons with the Tennessee Volunteers. He also attended high school in Murfreesboro, which sits roughly 35 miles from where the Titans play.
“It’s also worth noting that new general manager Mike Borgonzi was not a part of the front office that traded for Ridley. That could lead Tennessee to search for another veteran upgrade as it looks to support Ward during his rookie season.”
The Titans are building around rookie quarterback Ward. Adding a reliable veteran receiver who’s still in his prime would make sense for their development plans.
Playing close to home would bring extra motivation for Jennings. He’s known for giving maximum effort every time he steps on the field, and a homecoming could add even more fuel to his game.
The 49ers didn’t have the season they hoped for last year. With all eyes on how they’ll bounce back, losing a key contributor like Jennings would create another hole to fill.
Training camp will likely determine how this situation plays out.
