College football teams keep finding new ways to get fans excited, but Akron just announced something nobody’s ever tried before.
The Zips revealed a promotion that’ll let one fan actually serve as an offensive assistant coach for a game. The fan won’t wear a headset during the actual game, but they’ll help script the opening drive.
For Akron supporters who’ve always wondered what it’s like to help plan game strategy, this is their shot.
Fan Gets to Script Opening Drive
Akron announced the promotion that will make one fan the “Offensive Coordinator of the Game.” The winner will work with the coaching staff to script the first offensive series for Akron’s home opener against Robert Morris.
“We’re always looking for new ways to bring our fans closer to the program,” Director of Athletics Andrew Goodrich said. “This is about giving one of our most loyal supporters a seat at the table, right alongside our coaching staff, on the biggest night of the season.”
Head coach Joe Moorhead backed the promotion when it was announced.
“I’m looking forward to collaborating with the season ticket holder who wins this contest,” Moorhead said. “This will give our fans a behind-the-scenes experience that has never been done before anywhere, so I’m excited to show them how to put together the opening script and see what they can do.”

Only season-ticket holders can enter the promotion. Every season-ticket holder automatically gets entered into a random drawing.
Season-ticket holders can earn extra entries by recruiting new season-ticket holders to Akron football.
Akron will hold the random drawing on August 19 to pick the winner. That fan will then meet privately with Moorhead during the week of the Zips’ home opener to help script the opening drive.
The Zips open the season on the road against Wake Forest, then host Robert Morris on September 12 for their home opener.
How to Enter the Promotion
Fans need to hold season tickets for Akron football this season to enter. The number of entries in the random drawing matches the number of season tickets each person holds.
Fans can add more entries by recruiting new season-ticket holders. The promotion is designed to boost season-ticket sales across the board.
