Alabama’s standing in the SEC has shifted following Nick Saban’s departure from Tuscaloosa, according to anonymous coaches speaking to Athlon Sports.
“The expectations define this place. I think you’ll see a competitive program that could end up in Atlanta and make the playoff, but this is a new era. Bama’s not a surefire lock every season,” one SEC head coach said.
The Crimson Tide are still expected to contend for playoff spots, but they no longer carry the aura of inevitability that defined Saban’s dynasty.
Kalen DeBoer’s quarterback decision looms as the most critical factor for Alabama’s 2025 season. The competition features Ty Simpson, Austin Mack, and Keelon Russell.
“The biggest question will be quarterback, obviously, but they have a really solid offensive line, and the roster doesn’t have any obvious holes to fill. They’re going to compete for a playoff spot for sure,” the SEC coach added.
Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb’s implementation of DeBoer’s system will be closely watched throughout the season.
DeBoer arrived in Tuscaloosa knowing he’d face constant comparisons to Saban, particularly when results don’t meet the program’s established standards.
The team is expected to improve as the season progresses.
