Texas Longhorns are preparing for a new era as Arch Manning steps into the starting quarterback role for the 2025 season, following Quinn Ewers’ departure for the NFL.
Manning, 19, comes from football’s most recognized family. He’s the nephew of NFL legends Peyton and Eli Manning and grandson of Archie Manning.
The transition at quarterback comes after Texas’ College Football Playoff semifinal loss to Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl.
ESPN analyst Marty Smith predicts unprecedented media attention for Manning’s debut season.
“Just know this, brother, it’s going to be Tim Tebow-level hysteria this fall when we go to Austin, Texas,” Smith told Paul Finebaum. “When he is behind center full time for the first time, it’s going to be like it was with Tebow at Florida — everywhere they go, they’re going to be rockstars. That’s what I anticipate, and I think that’s what we’re gonna see.”
The comparison to Tebow is significant. From 2006 to 2009, Tebow generated unprecedented media coverage at Florida, drawing national attention everywhere the team traveled.
Manning spent two seasons as backup quarterback at Texas, though fan attention remained focused on him despite Ewers’ starting role.
Texas enters the 2025 season as an early favorite for the national championship. Manning is already listed among top contenders for the Heisman Trophy.
The expectations stem from both Manning’s on-field abilities and his family legacy. His arrival marks Texas’ highest-profile quarterback recruit since Vince Young.
Texas begins spring practice next month, giving Manning his first opportunity to work with the first-team offense.
