That didn’t happen. Manning showed flashes throughout his first full season as starter. But inconsistency plagued him as Texas missed the College Football Playoff.

4:39 p.m. — Texas’ defense forced a three-and-out. The Longhorns took over with 2:44 left in the first half in a tie game.

Texas ran one play before the two-minute timeout. A traditional run gained 10 yards to reach Michigan’s 45-yard line.

After the break, Manning threw a screen pass left for just one yard. He scrambled from the pocket and ran 10 yards to the 21-yard line. His next pass fell incomplete, and what looked like a touchdown turned into a drop when his receiver was hit hard by a defender.

On third and long, Texas looked confused. It appeared Steve Sarkisian wanted a timeout, but the ball was snapped. Manning lost 12 yards on the play, ending his first-half performance.

4:27 p.m. — Texas forced a punt and got the ball back with 6:43 left in the first half. The game remained tied at 17.

Manning opened with a 12-yard completion. His next pass was tipped at the line and nearly intercepted. After a holding penalty, Manning scrambled for five yards. He threw incomplete on third and long to end the drive.

4:17 p.m. — Michigan scored a touchdown on their drive. Manning took the field trailing 17-10 with 10:17 left in the half.

The Texas quarterback started with a five-yard pass. He appeared to break free for a 20-yard run, but holding negated the play. He followed with a 15-yard completion.

Manning threw incomplete, then connected with Ryan Wingo for 26 yards to Michigan’s 45.

Manning missed down the left sideline on his next attempt. He then fired a 17-yard strike to tight end Jack Endries in the end zone for his 25th touchdown pass of the season.

3:53 p.m. — The Longhorns benefited from an offside penalty to set up third and one. Texas ran up the middle for no gain and went for it on fourth down. Manning took the snap and ran left for 19 yards.

The Longhorns scored a rushing touchdown on the next play.

3:48 p.m. — Michigan scored a touchdown off the turnover. Manning took the field trailing 10-3 with 3:15 left in the first quarter.

The Texas quarterback started with back-to-back completions totaling 11 yards. Manning threw deep to Parker Livingston later in the drive, but the pass was slightly overthrown and hit off Livingston’s fingers. He then completed a quick sideline pass that the receiver took 20 yards to Michigan’s 31-yard line.

Manning ran for three yards to bring up third down and the end of the first quarter.

3:37 p.m. — Manning’s next drive was delayed. Michigan kicked a field goal, then forced a fumble on the ensuing kickoff.

3:22 p.m. — Manning’s second drive ended quickly. He threw incomplete on first down and had a nine-yard incompletion to Wingo. The running back lost two yards on third down and Texas punted.

3:12 p.m. — Manning’s day started slowly. He completed his first two passes for a gain of one and a loss of one, respectively. Manning then threw deep and converted third down with a 22-yard completion to Ryan Wingo.
