Texas quarterback Arch Manning revealed his current NFL role models at the Manning Passing Academy this week. The sophomore didn’t look to his famous family for inspiration.
“I’m watching a lot of Josh Allen and Joe Burrow right now. Those are my guys,” Manning told On Texas Football. “They’re dogs. I’ve watched some of their college film. They’re just good players, elite competitors and fun to watch.”
Manning’s choice surprised some observers. He’s surrounded by NFL quarterbacks at family gatherings.
His grandfather Archie starred for the New Orleans Saints. Uncle Peyton won two Super Bowls and five MVP awards. Uncle Eli captured two championships with the New York Giants.
Manning takes over as Texas’s starting quarterback this season. He’ll replace Quinn Ewers, who entered the NFL Draft and joined the Miami Dolphins after two seasons in Austin.
The Longhorns open their season August 30 at Ohio State. Manning will face the same Buckeyes team that ended Texas’s national championship hopes in the College Football Playoff semifinals.
Manning spent most of last season learning behind Ewers. He appeared in eight games and threw for 939 yards with nine touchdowns.
The 19-year-old quarterback chose Allen and Burrow for their playing styles. Both players excel at extending plays and making throws under pressure.
Allen led the Buffalo Bills to four straight AFC East titles. Burrow took the Cincinnati Bengals to a Super Bowl appearance in just his second season.
Manning’s family hosts the Manning Passing Academy every summer in Louisiana. The camp attracts top high school quarterbacks from across the country.
Texas expects Manning to lead their championship push in the expanded College Football Playoff format. The Longhorns enter their second season in the SEC after leaving the Big 12.
The game against Ohio State will test Manning’s readiness for prime-time football. Kickoff is set for Columbus on August 30.
