The Kansas City Chiefs are considering adding more receiving talent despite winning 15 games last season and making their third straight Super Bowl appearance. Patrick Mahomes and the offense struggled at times with their receiving corps.
Injuries to Hollywood Brown, Rashee Rice and others forced the Chiefs to seek reinforcements, including trading for veteran DeAndre Hopkins mid-season.
While the Chiefs remained resilient, they ultimately fell to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl. The loss highlighted the need for more offensive playmakers.
Kansas City addressed this need last year by trading up to select Xavier Worthy from Texas. The speedster finished second on the team in both receptions and receiving yards, trailing only Travis Kelce.
NFL Network’s Rhett Lewis projects the Chiefs will use the No. 31 overall pick on another receiver – Arizona’s Tetairoa McMillan.
“Would the Chiefs consider spending their first-round pick on a receiver for a second consecutive draft? Maybe not, but McMillan offers a body type and skill set Patrick Mahomes has never really had at his disposal. And upgrading the playmakers around No. 15 is never a bad idea,” Lewis wrote.
McMillan finished third nationally with 1,319 receiving yards last season at Arizona. At 6-foot-4, his size and catch radius would complement Worthy’s speed, giving Mahomes a type of target he’s rarely had in his career.
The offensive line remains a concern after Mahomes took six sacks in the Super Bowl. Protecting the quarterback could be the higher priority in the draft.
However, if McMillan is available at No. 31, his potential might be too valuable to pass up.
A Worthy-McMillan pairing could provide Mahomes with younger, more dynamic receivers to work with for years to come.
