Bill Belichick might not stick around Chapel Hill much longer. One longtime college football writer thinks the coach’s time at North Carolina could end after just two seasons.

Ralph Russo of The Athletic projects every Power Four coaching position for 2030. He doesn’t see Belichick lasting beyond the 2026 season.

The prediction comes after a rough first year for the former Patriots coach.

North Carolina finished 4-8 in 2024, marking the program’s worst record since 2018. The Tar Heels lost several games they should’ve won and never found their rhythm.

Russo projects Miami defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman as Belichick’s replacement. “Based on the assumption that North Carolina is going to be looking for a new coach by December, Hetherman should be a hot commodity among coordinators after transforming The U’s defense,” Russo wrote.

The 72-year-old Belichick signed a five-year, $50 million contract with UNC. But college football moves fast, especially when results don’t follow.

Belichick’s NFL legacy remains secure after nearly 50 years in professional football. Six Super Bowl titles as a head coach and two more as an assistant speak for themselves.

But the college experiment creates questions about his motivations.

After decades at the sport’s highest level, why take what many view as a step down? The move to Chapel Hill surprised the football world when it was announced.

Now it’s looking like it might be short-lived.

If Belichick does leave after 2026, the NFL could welcome him back. Several franchises would likely consider him despite his age and the college detour.

The 2025 season becomes crucial for both Belichick and North Carolina. Another losing record would make Russo’s prediction look even more accurate.
