North Carolina lost another 2026 recruit when three-star offensive lineman Mason Wilhelm flipped his commitment to Ohio State on Friday.
Wilhelm, from Lakewood (Ohio) St. Edward, cited relationship differences as the main reason for his decision. The Buckeyes legacy recruit told Rivals that “development, culture, brotherhood” drove his choice.
“The opportunity to play Ohio Stadium, and compete in the Big Ten was something that was always in the back of my mind,” Wilhelm added.
The flip continues a rough recruiting stretch for Bill Belichick and his staff. The Tar Heels lost several top 2026 prospects after their two-win start to the season.
Ohio State now ranks No. 8 nationally in the 2026 class according to Rivals.
The Buckeyes have 21 committed players, with half rated four-star or better. That group includes NFL legacies Chris Henry Jr. and Jay Timmons.
Belichick’s staff faces significant ground to make up in recruiting. North Carolina currently sits 15th nationally in the 2026 class with 36 incoming players, though that number will likely change during the transfer portal period.
The 73-year-old coach’s team remains in North Carolina for its final three games. They’ll need to win out against Wake Forest, Duke, and NC State to reach a bowl game.
A strong finish could help stabilize the program’s recruiting momentum heading into the offseason.
