North Carolina coach Bill Belichick faces a lawsuit from a painter who claims he suffered injuries while working on the coach’s Nantucket home last summer.

Handyman Andrew Jackson filed the suit alleging Belichick improperly maintained plastic sheeting used to protect floors and furniture during the July 2024 work. Jackson claims this created a “dangerous and unsafe” work environment that led to a severe ankle injury.

The lawsuit seeks nearly $300,000 in damages for pain, suffering, disability, lost wages and medical expenses, according to the Daily Mail.

“(Belichick) owed (Jackson) a duty to use reasonable care to maintain the premises in a reasonably safe condition, to inspect for hazards, to warn of dangers of which it knew or should have known, and to coordinate the site in a reasonably safe manner for lawful workers present there.”

The legal action comes as Belichick enters his second season leading the Tar Heels.

Belichick signed a five-year, $50 million deal with North Carolina in January 2024. The contract includes $10 million per year in base salary, with the first three years fully guaranteed. He can earn up to $1.75 million annually in performance-based incentives.

The 72-year-old coach would owe a $1 million buyout if he returns to the NFL. His contract requires him to notify athletic director Bubba Cunningham before speaking with any NFL teams.

North Carolina finished 4-8 in Belichick’s first collegiate season. The former Patriots coach compiled a 333-178 record during his NFL career but wasn’t selected for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2025.

Belichick continues preparing for the 2025 season as he works to rebuild the Tar Heels program.
