Brian Kelly says he’s open to returning to college coaching if the right opportunity emerges.
The former LSU coach told SiriusXM’s “Dusty and Danny in the Morning” on Friday that he hasn’t ruled out getting back into college football. Kelly was fired by the Tigers during last season despite a buyout exceeding $50 million.
“I don’t know that I’ve made the decision that I want to get back in. But while you wait, you need to work. I need to stay in the game.”
Kelly plans to visit programs during spring practice to observe how teams operate in today’s college football landscape.
The 63-year-old coach wants to better understand the sport’s rapidly changing environment. That includes roster management, NIL deals, and transfer portal activity.
“I’m going to get out and see spring ball, see how programs are operating,” Kelly said. “I want to get around and learn some things and see where I can grow and be better.”
Kelly compiled a 113-40 record during 12 seasons at Notre Dame from 2010-21. He led the Fighting Irish to five consecutive 10-win seasons late in his tenure.
His 2012 Notre Dame team reached the BCS national championship game.
Kelly left South Bend for LSU following Ed Orgeron’s departure in 2021. He won 10 games in each of his first two seasons with the Tigers but never reached the College Football Playoff.
LSU dismissed Kelly after a 5-3 start in 2025 despite the massive buyout.
The veteran coach made clear he’s keeping his options open. “If the right situation comes along,” Kelly said, “I’m certainly going to entertain it.”
