Brock Huard Says Auburn Should Consider Arizona State Head Coach Kenny Dillingham image

Fox Sports analyst Brock Huard named Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham as Auburn’s odds-on favorite for their vacant coaching position during a conversation on “The Next Round” podcast.

“It looks like Kenny Dillingham, by a slight lean right now, according to Vegas, is the odds-on favorite,” Huard told host Lance Taylor when asked about potential Auburn fits.

The key question centers on whether Auburn can convince Dillingham to leave his alma mater. Huard wondered if the coach would view the opportunity differently given conference dynamics.

“Does he look at the Big 12 and say no, I’d rather build a powerhouse where I went to school, where I know the inside out. Maybe he comes to the Plains and brings (Sam) Leavitt with him.”

Dillingham has proven he can develop quarterbacks at the highest level. While serving as Oregon’s offensive coordinator, he recruited former Auburn quarterback Bo Nix and developed him into a first-round draft pick for the Denver Broncos.

His coaching background includes significant SEC experience as Florida State’s offensive coordinator.

Arizona State just completed a remarkable season under Dillingham’s leadership. The Sun Devils reached the College Football Playoff and nearly upset Texas in the quarterfinals before falling 39-31 in double overtime.

Huard’s Fox Sports colleague Joel Klatt has suggested Auburn may not be the most attractive opening available. This reality could push the Tigers toward candidates like Dillingham rather than pursuing established big-name coaches.

The timing presents both opportunity and challenge for Auburn’s search. Dillingham has built momentum at his alma mater, but the SEC’s resources and recruiting advantages could prove tempting.

Auburn’s ability to land their top target may depend on what they’re willing to offer compared to Arizona State’s commitment to keeping him in Tempe.
