The Cleveland Browns are taking a closer look at Shedeur Sanders after his strong showing during minicamp in Berea. Reports indicate Sanders made "significant strides" in his performance, according to Mary Kay Cabot.
Browns analyst Earl Da Pearl believes Sanders has positioned himself as a legitimate candidate for the backup quarterback role heading into training camp.
"When you and me both know that this man has the most upside of any other quarterback on this roster, there is no way that Shedeur Sanders is not entering training camp, for me, as QB No. 2 on this Browns depth chart," Da Pearl said on Cleveland radio station 92.3 The Fan.
Sanders has been practicing with the backup unit and players lower on the depth chart during organized team activities. His minicamp performance has drawn praise from observers who’ve watched his development in the Browns’ system.
“From everybody that I respect and I trust in this game, has said that Shedeur Sanders has looked phenomenal in this offseason portion,” Da Pearl argued.
The analyst emphasized Sanders’ ability to process the team’s system and translate that knowledge into on-field success, regardless of which unit he’s practicing with.
"You can spin it however you want to spin it, they are in pads. But when we are talking about a guy learning a system and being able to process what he’s learning and be able to transfer that into success on the football field — (regardless) if he’s running with the ones, twos, threes to the fours — when you are doing what’s asked of you and you are doing it well and earning the respect of the veterans… it says a lot."
Sanders faces two primary scenarios as training camp approaches. He could secure the backup quarterback position or potentially miss the final 53-man roster entirely.
The uncertainty around Sanders’ roster status has been ongoing throughout the offseason. His minicamp performance may have clarified his standing with the organization heading into the more competitive training camp period.
The Browns will make final roster decisions following training camp and preseason games.
