BYU head coach Kalani Sitake says the program isn’t concerned about quarterback Jake Retzlaff’s departure after the starter entered the transfer portal rather than serve a seven-game suspension.
Retzlaff was facing the suspension for violating the school’s honor code. The violation came to light as part of sexual assault allegations against the quarterback.
The timing creates challenges for the Cougars, who went through part of an offseason expecting Retzlaff to return as their established starter.
Sitake kept his comments about Retzlaff brief but positive during recent remarks to media.
“We love Jake and appreciate everything he’s done for us, but I’ll let him make statements about his situation,” the coach said per Pete Thamel.
The coach expressed confidence in BYU’s quarterback depth chart moving forward.
Three quarterbacks will now compete for the starting job that Retzlaff held last season. Sitake said he’s excited about the competition between those players.
“The program is fine. No matter the situation. It’s not about one coach. It’s not about one player, either. We feel good about our program,” Sitake added.
Retzlaff hasn’t officially completed his transfer from BYU yet.
How the Cougars will perform without their former starter in 2025 remains unclear as spring practice approaches.
