The Cleveland Browns open their season in under 90 days against division rival Cincinnati. But the team’s four-way quarterback competition has dominated every conversation.
Shedeur Sanders has generated headlines since draft day. The rookie sits at the bottom of the depth chart but remains a daily talking point in June.
Sanders has shown accuracy in team drills during early practices. The Colorado product is currently outside looking in on the quarterback battle.
The 23-year-old’s role with the team has become a point of contention among fans and media.
Local Host Criticizes Team’s Approach
ESPN Cleveland 850 FM host Tony Rizzo criticized the Browns’ handling of their rookie quarterback during a recent show.
“Shedeur is the only guy that hasn’t gone against the ones, is that right? Did anyone ask the coach? Of the 50 reporters out there, did anybody ask, ‘Coach, why have we not seen Shedeur against the number ones?’ No, of course, they haven’t!”
Rizzo continued his defense of Sanders.
“I know my guy’s the best quarterback, I do. I think he’s better than Kenny Pickett or will be, and I do think he’ll be better than Dillon Gabriel. I think that guy’s the best quarterback in camp.”
The comments came despite Sanders working exclusively with second and third-team units.
Reality Check on Expectations
The coaching staff hasn’t moved Sanders up the depth chart yet. He’s still learning the offensive system and adjusting to NFL speed.
Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel have received first-team reps ahead of the rookie.
Sanders needs time to develop before taking snaps with the starters. The team is taking a measured approach with their draft pick.
Pads come on next week. That’s when the real evaluation begins for all four quarterbacks competing for the starting job.
The Browns face realistic expectations about their rookie’s timeline. Sanders will get his opportunities when the coaching staff determines he’s ready.
