Deion Sanders missed mandatory youth athletic camps this summer while dealing with unspecified health issues, according to USA Today’s Brent Schrotenboer.

The Colorado coach hasn’t been on campus since April. Operating youth and high school camps is listed as an official duty in his employment contract.

Sanders’ return timeline remains unclear.

“Sanders Sr. has been away from his job in Colorado since April and did not attend Colorado’s annual youth and high school camps in June, even though operating such camps is listed in his employment contract as one of his official duties,” Schrotenboer wrote.

The coach is scheduled to appear at Big 12 Conference media day in Frisco, Texas on July 9. This period typically represents downtime for college football coaches.

Many expected Coach Prime to leave coaching after his sons Shedeur and Shilo completed their final seasons with the Buffaloes. Instead, he’s secured salary increases for several assistants and built a top-20 transfer class through the portal.

Sanders has faced serious health challenges over multiple years.

Blood clots in his leg have required more than ten surgeries and led to toe amputations. The health issues have been ongoing and legitimate medical concerns.

Colorado Athletic Director Rick George has reason to show patience with Sanders. The program receives significantly more national attention with Coach Prime than it would without him.

The Buffaloes’ profile has increased dramatically since Sanders’ arrival. His impact on the program’s visibility extends far beyond wins and losses on the field.
