Shedeur Sanders walked across the graduation stage at the University of Colorado Boulder on Saturday. The former Buffaloes quarterback isn’t done with school yet.
Sanders told reporters he’s considering pursuing a master’s degree after finishing his sociology program with a 3.9 GPA.
“I gotta stack up my real life chips… I might think about getting my master’s. I don’t know yet. Something I really feel like that would be very effective,” Sanders said during his graduation ceremony, according to video from the event. “I don’t think you have to get your master’s or have to have your degree to be successful, but I’m doing it more for the activity of learning.”
The 24-year-old quarterback faced criticism during his time at Colorado for missing classes. Sanders reportedly attended his first in-person class during the spring 2024 semester.
NFL Career Questions
Many professional athletes complete degree programs while playing in the NFL.
Sanders’ comments about stacking up “real life chips” suggest he’s planning for life beyond football. His older brother Shilo has already moved on from his playing career.
Recent controversies involving the Sanders family have created headaches for NFL teams. Shilo made derogatory comments toward Plain Dealer reporter Mary Kay Cabot that drew media attention. The incident even reached their father, Deion Sanders.
NFL franchises may hesitate to deal with family drama, especially for a backup quarterback.
Sanders currently has a spot in the Cleveland Browns’ quarterback room behind Deshaun Watson. If that doesn’t work out, he’s got options back in Boulder.
The quarterback clearly maintains ties to Colorado and could return to the university community if his NFL career stalls.
