Colorado retired Shedeur Sanders’ jersey number during its spring game this weekend.

The ceremony highlighted the quarterback battle facing the Buffaloes as they prepare for the 2025 season without their star passer.

Colorado has two options at quarterback: Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter and 5-star freshman Juju Lewis.

Salter took the lead in the competition during the spring game, according to Sports Illustrated.

He completed a third-and-22 pass for a first down early in the game before throwing a 22-yard touchdown to Joseph Williams.

The publication described the quarterback battle:

“Lewis flashed his upside in extended reps, showing why many consider him to be the future of the program. But Salter’s command of the offense and veteran presence stood out—and may give him the edge heading into summer.”

Sports Illustrated noted that “The moment didn’t feel too big” for Salter.

Salter addressed the jersey retirement ceremony for Sanders and Travis Hunter after the game.

“That was Shedeur and Travis’ accomplishments,” Salter said. “I’m not looking to get my jersey retired at the end of the season—I’m looking to get us to a Big 12 Championship and get to the playoffs—and just have a fun and amazing season.”

The quarterback competition presents Coach Deion Sanders with a choice between Salter’s experience and Lewis’ potential.

Both quarterbacks offer different strengths for the Buffaloes heading into summer workouts.
