The Indianapolis Colts lost rookie cornerback Justin Walley for the season after he tore his ACL in Thursday’s preseason game against Baltimore.

Colts coach Shane Steichen announced the injury Friday. Walley went down during the game and won’t return this year.

The third-round pick out of Minnesota was earning first-team reps in training camp. Coaches praised his athleticism and football instincts during the early weeks of practice.

Walley started 48 games across four seasons with the Gophers under P.J. Fleck.

His senior season included 42 tackles and two interceptions. He returned one pick for a touchdown and added a sack while helping Minnesota to a 7-5 record.

Big Ten coaches consistently noted his work ethic and leadership qualities. He regularly matched up against the conference’s top receivers.

The Colts drafted Walley expecting him to contribute immediately in their secondary. His combination of size and speed fit what Indianapolis wanted in their defensive backfield.

Team officials remain confident in his long-term potential despite the setback.

Walley will stay involved with the team during his rehabilitation process. The typical ACL recovery timeline puts his return around next season’s training camp.

Indianapolis must now adjust their cornerback depth chart heading into the regular season. The injury creates an opportunity for other defensive backs on the roster.
