Concern grows for Deion Sanders as health issue sidelines him from Colorado football image

According to Brent Schrotenboer of USA Today, Deion Sanders hasn’t returned to campus for Colorado’s summer football camps. The head coach is recovering from an unspecified health issue at his estate in Canyon, Texas.

The university has used Sanders’ image to promote the camps. But it’s unclear when the 57-year-old coach will be healthy enough to resume his duties.

This comes as the Buffaloes prepare for Sanders’ third season leading the program.

Deion Jr. addressed his father’s condition during a June 8 livestream. He said the coach was "feeling well" but still resting.

“He’ll tell y’all soon enough what he going through, what he went through. When we get back in Boulder, I don’t know. I’m waiting until my dad leaves. When he leaves, then I’ll go. Until then, I’m gonna sit here with him.”

Sanders canceled a scheduled speaking engagement in Florida that same weekend. The official reason cited was an "unavoidable last-minute scheduling change."

The timing has fueled speculation about his condition’s seriousness.

Sanders has been largely out of the public eye since the NFL Draft in April. His ongoing absence deepens concerns as summer camps continue without him.

Previous Health Challenges

In 2021, Sanders underwent multiple procedures to address circulation issues in his legs. The treatments ultimately led to the amputation of two toes.

During a podcast appearance with former NFL cornerback Asante Samuel in late May, he hinted at fresh health challenges. He called it "a whole nother level" and revealed he’d lost 14 pounds.

The specifics of his current condition remain unknown.

Critical Timing for Program

Sanders’ health concerns come as Colorado faces a season of transition. For the first time since Sanders arrived in Boulder, the Buffaloes will be without Shedeur Sanders, Shilo Sanders, and Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter.

These three players were most synonymous with the program’s identity during Sanders’ tenure.

His return timeline remains uncertain. As summer unfolds in Boulder, the Buffaloes are preparing without the man who brought them back into the national conversation.

The program enters Sanders’ third season with expectations to propel the Buffaloes back into the spotlight.
