Former Florida quarterback DJ Lagway opened up about his difficult experience with the Gators program in a candid interview that’s raising questions about how the school handled its star player.
Lagway told USA Today Sports that during his two seasons in Gainesville, he never attended in-person classes. The school kept him limited to online coursework at home to avoid fan interactions on campus.
He later suggested on social media that this isolation was the university’s decision, not his own.
“I was in a bubble down there, I didn’t feel like a normal person. I didn’t even know what the campus looked like. I was really closed off. I didn’t really hang out with my teammates. Yeah, I was depressed. I just stayed in my own land. Stayed out of the way.”

The former five-star recruit was rated as the top quarterback in the 2024 recruiting class. He arrived in Gainesville with massive expectations.
Lagway completed his Florida career with 4,179 passing yards, 26 touchdowns and 23 interceptions over two seasons.
His final year with the Gators ended poorly. Florida finished 4-8 last season before Lagway entered the transfer portal.
He’s now committed to Baylor, where he’s expected to compete for the starting quarterback job. The Bears are getting a player with significant experience but also one who’s been through a challenging college experience.
The situation raises questions about how Florida managed its highest-profile recruit and whether the isolation contributed to both Lagway’s struggles and the team’s poor performance.
