The Philadelphia Eagles captured their second Lombardi Trophy, defeating the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 in Super Bowl 59.
The Eagles dominated from the opening kickoff, building a 24-0 lead by halftime against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense.
Eagles rookie cornerback Cooper DeJean delivered the game’s defining moment, returning an interception for a touchdown on his 22nd birthday. The Eagles defense sacked Mahomes six times.
DeJean’s pick-6 marked a historic achievement. He became just the second player in NFL’s 78-year history to score a touchdown in a championship game on his birthday.
ESPN’s Chris Berman presented DeJean with a birthday cake during the postgame celebration, joined by Eagles running back Saquon Barkley, who also celebrated his birthday.
“I think it’s just the credit to the people around me,” DeJean said. “The coaches, they’ve helped me grow a lot this season. I mean, all the leaders we have on defense [are] helping me along. I couldn’t be in a better situation.”
The victory prevented Kansas City from becoming the first team to win three consecutive Super Bowls. It also marked DeJean’s first NFL touchdown.
Philadelphia will enter next season looking to become the NFL’s next repeat champion.
