The Seattle Seahawks announced their Devon Witherspoon dominated Super Bowl 60, helping lead the team to a 29-13 victory over the New England Patriots.
The former Illinois cornerback delivered a game-changing performance in the fourth quarter. His strip sack set up the touchdown that sealed Seattle’s championship win.
Kenneth Walker III took home MVP honors for his rushing performance.
Witherspoon’s championship makes him the 28th former Fighting Illini player to win a Lombardi Trophy. The defensive back was selected fifth overall in the 2023 NFL Draft.
The celebration started immediately after the game. Witherspoon told NBC Sports he was ready to celebrate with his teammates.
“I’m finna go have a drink, or two, or maybe three,” Witherspoon said.
Witherspoon’s performance capped off a dominant season for Seattle’s secondary. The unit established its own identity separate from the franchise’s legendary “Legion of Boom” defense from the 2010s.
“We’re always gonna celebrate, give [the LOB] guys credit for what they do, but, like I said, we got to do things our own way, and we got to find our own identity,” Witherspoon said last Monday ahead of the game.
The championship validates Seattle’s rebuild around young defensive talent.
Witherspoon has emerged as one of the NFL’s most exciting defensive players since entering the league. His combination of coverage skills and pass rush ability from the cornerback position makes him a unique weapon.
The Seahawks’ championship run featured dominant defensive performances throughout the playoffs. Witherspoon’s strip sack in the Super Bowl provided the signature moment of their title run.
Seattle’s coaching staff has praised Witherspoon’s development since his rookie season. His ability to impact games in multiple ways has become a cornerstone of the team’s defensive scheme.
The victory marks Seattle’s second Super Bowl championship in franchise history.
