The Chicago Bears face a difficult decision regarding Jaquan Brisker’s contract extension, according to The Athletic.
The former Penn State star has established himself as one of the league’s top safeties when healthy. But recurring concussion issues complicate his future with the team.
Brisker missed the entire second half of last season after suffering a concussion in Week 5.
The injury history becomes a major factor as Chicago evaluates his next contract. Brisker is the Bears’ only guaranteed starter under 30 entering a contract year.
“Brisker is the Bears’ only surefire starter who is under 30 and in a contract year. Concussions have been a serious issue. The latest one — which occurred in Week 5 last season — kept Brisker out the rest of the year. He hasn’t been shy about his motivation.
He’s gifted athletically and a vocal leader, a trait that was sorely missed last season, but concussions are unpredictable, putting risk on any potential extension. Veteran Kevin Byard is set to be a free agent, too, making safety a 2026 need. Braxton Jones has to win the left tackle job first before we talk about his extension prospects.”
The Bears drafted Brisker in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft after three seasons at Penn State.
He’s started every game he’s been available for during his three NFL seasons. His leadership presence was notably missed during his extended absence last season.
Chicago must weigh Brisker’s on-field impact against the unpredictable nature of head injuries.
The team also faces uncertainty at safety with veteran Kevin Byard set to become a free agent. This creates additional pressure to to retain Brisker if his health concerns can be managed.
If Brisker can stay healthy and avoid future concussion issues, he’s likely to receive a significant contract extension from Chicago.
Until then, the Bears continue evaluating their options at the position.
