Former West Virginia quarterback Garrett Greene has signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent, but he’ll be converting to wide receiver.

“It’s hard to make the NFL as a 5-foot-10 quarterback,” Greene told Jim Henry of the Tallahassee Democrat. “When I started playing football in middle school, high school, I also played receiver and am pretty comfortable with doing that. I just thought it was my best way to make an impact on an NFL roster.”

Greene appeared in 45 games at WVU, throwing for 5,370 yards and 36 touchdowns while rushing for 2,136 yards and 28 scores.

He caught four passes for 32 yards during the 2022 season.

Greene’s transition from quarterback to receiver mirrors the path taken by Julian Edelman, who played quarterback at Kent State before becoming a standout NFL receiver.

“That’s the guy, I wouldn’t say idolized, but the guy I’m trying to model my trajectory on,” Greene said.

The Buccaneers’ coaching staff includes a familiar face for Greene. Blaine Stewart, Tampa Bay’s new offensive quality control coach, previously worked on the offensive staff at West Virginia.

Greene brings athleticism and running ability to the receiver position. He’ll now compete for a roster spot with the Buccaneers.
