Penn State Athletic Director Pat Kraft congratulated former coach James Franklin on his new position at Virginia Tech through social media.

An account appearing to be Kraft posted on X following news of Franklin’s hiring by the Hokies.

“Well deserved! Congratulations Coach Franklin!!!”

Franklin was dismissed midseason after Penn State started as the preseason No. 2 team but quickly dropped from College Football Playoff contention. The Nittany Lions fired Franklin following a 22-21 loss to Northwestern.

Franklin Speaks on Penn State Exit

The former Penn State coach addressed his firing during a “College GameDay” appearance, saying he wanted to finish the season.

“I thought we were going to win a national championship [at Penn State]. We were close. That goal hasn’t changed, we’re just going to go win a national championship somewhere else now.”

Franklin said Kraft’s decision surprised him but he understood the direction both sides were taking.

“Twelve years, a ton of good moments, a bunch of big wins. But decisions were made, and I’m not involved in those decisions. I’m very, very grateful for the time I had, and, most importantly, for the relationships I was able to build.”

New Chapter at Virginia Tech

Franklin begins his tenure in Blacksburg with championship aspirations. He released a statement outlining his vision for the program.

“I’m honored and humbled to join the Hokie family. My vision is simple: to restore unmatched excellence, to build something that lasts, and to serve this University, the Commonwealth of Virginia and our amazing fan base with honor, integrity, and passion. I look forward to getting to work with our players, our staff, and the entire Virginia Tech community.”

The schools haven’t faced each other in recent years, making the timing of any future matchup unclear.

Kraft Defends Decision

Kraft previously told reporters that dismissing Franklin served both parties’ interests.

“My job is to evaluate everything and make hard decisions that are in the best interest of our athletes, our program, and our department.”

“Football is our backbone. We’ve invested at the highest level, and with that comes high expectations. Ultimately, I believe a new leader can help us win a national championship, and now is the right time for this change.”

Penn State continues its search for Franklin’s replacement.

Both sides appear to harbor no ill will despite the abrupt separation after twelve seasons.
