Boston College has named redshirt sophomore Dylan Lonergan as its starting quarterback for the season opener against Fordham on August 30, according to sources.

Bill O’Brien made the decision to go with the Alabama transfer over returning senior Grayson James. Lonergan transferred to Boston College this winter after spending time with the Crimson Tide under Kalen DeBoer.

The 6-foot-2 right-hander saw limited action at Alabama. He completed 5-of-6 passes for 23 yards against Mercer and had one rushing attempt in a game against Western Kentucky.

O’Brien has familiarity with Lonergan from his time as an assistant at Alabama, where he helped recruit the quarterback out of Brookwood High School in Georgia.

James started six games for the Eagles last season after Thomas Castellanos left the program. The senior will now serve as the backup heading into the season.

Lonergan was ranked as ESPN’s No. 36 overall recruit in his high school class before originally committing to Alabama.

The Eagles open their season at home against Fordham before hitting the road for back-to-back games. They’ll face Michigan State on September 6 and Stanford on September 13 before returning home to host California on September 27.
