ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports that former Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George has emerged as a leading candidate for the Bowling Green State University head coaching position.
George currently serves as head coach at Tennessee State, where he’s compiled a 24-22 record over his tenure. His team reached the FCS playoffs this season before losing in the first round.
The Falcons need a new coach after Scot Loeffler left to become quarterbacks coach with the Philadelphia Eagles following six seasons at BGSU.
Bowling Green has appeared in bowl games for three consecutive seasons.
According to Thamel, BGSU interviewed three finalists on Friday, with a final decision “expected in the near future.”
George won the 1995 Heisman Trophy while playing running back at Ohio State. He rushed for an OSU-record 1,927 yards and 24 touchdowns that season while adding 47 receptions for 417 yards.
He set a single-game school record with 314 rushing yards in a win over Illinois.
Though born in Philadelphia, George’s Ohio State connections would likely make him a popular hire within the state.
After his collegiate career, George played in the NFL where he became the Tennessee Titans’ all-time leading rusher.
The Athletic’s Zac Jackson notes that George previously expressed interest in the Akron head coaching vacancy a few seasons ago, suggesting he’s been looking to join the Mid-American Conference.
