Former LSU Star Blasts Texas in Steve Sarkisian CFP Controversy Explained image

Texas and Texas Tech are locked in a heated war of words that started with Steve Sarkisian’s controversial comments about College Football Playoff selection and strength of schedule during the offseason.

The Texas coach appeared to take a shot at Texas Tech and the Big 12 while discussing how the CFP committee evaluates team resumes. Sarkisian contrasted Big 12 schedules with what Texas faced in the SEC.

Cody Campbell, a billionaire Texas Tech supporter, fired back at Texas on social media after Sarkisian’s remarks.

Campbell challenged the Longhorns to schedule a game if they really believed their backup players could beat the Red Raiders’ starters.

Former LSU player Bobby Joseph Hebert III, known as T-Bob Herbert, also went after Sarkisian. Herbert accused Texas of ducking the challenge.

“If Texas doesn’t make an honest effort to play Texas Tech in week 1 they are bi*ch made. You can’t say you would win the Big 12 with your twos and threes and then refuse the challenge of a school who doesn’t even have their multi million dollar star quarterback,” Herbert tweeted.

Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire then escalated things even further. McGuire proposed canceling upcoming games against Texas State and Abilene Christian to clear the schedule for a Week 1 showdown with Texas.

Campbell offered to cover the buyout costs for both canceled games. According to FBSchedules, those buyouts total about $2.4 million.

McGuire’s team faced three ranked opponents during their 2025 Big 12 championship run. That included two games against BYU.

Texas played five ranked teams in the regular season and went 3-2 in those matchups.
