UNLV announced Monday that quarterback Alex Orji‘s season has ended following a devastating leg injury sustained during the Rebels’ 30-23 victory over UCLA.

Head coach Dan Mullen confirmed Orji suffered a Grade 3 LCL sprain that tore his hamstring off the bone. The injury requires surgery in the coming weeks.

The incident occurred in the first quarter against the Bruins when Orji was hit out of bounds.

Orji transferred to UNLV from Michigan this past offseason. He’d carved out a role in Mullen’s offense as a versatile option, primarily used for his rushing ability.

Through three games, Orji logged 10 carries for 42 yards and one touchdown. He also completed all three of his passing attempts for 37 yards.

“The devastating part is not just the loss of his talent on the field, but his leadership, his demeanor, the man that he is; it’s just heartbreaking,” Mullen said.

The Rebels will move forward with Anthony Colandrea as the starter. Through three games, Colandrea has completed over 75% of his passes for 647 yards and six touchdowns against one interception.

Cameron Friel will slide into the backup role.

Friel brings valuable experience, having thrown for more than 2,000 yards in his career. That includes 1,600 yards during his freshman campaign in 2021.

For Orji, the setback comes during what was expected to be a defining senior year. After limited action at Michigan, his move to UNLV offered a fresh start.

With only three appearances this season, he may be eligible for a medical redshirt. That would keep the door open for another chapter in his college career.
