The Miami Dolphins suffered a setback during Wednesday’s joint practice with the Detroit Lions when edge rusher Chop Robinson was carted off the field after sustaining an injury during a scramble drill.

The second-year player from Penn State had entered training camp positioned to start alongside Bradley Chubb this season. Robinson’s injury comes at a time when the Dolphins were counting on him to anchor their pass rush.

The severity of Robinson’s injury remains unclear.

Robinson recorded 26 tackles and six sacks as a rookie last season while primarily working in a rotational role. The 21-year-old was expected to see significantly more snaps this year as Miami’s defense looks to generate more pressure on opposing quarterbacks.

The Dolphins selected Robinson with the 21st overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft after he posted 41 tackles, 9.5 sacks and three forced fumbles during his final season at Penn State.

Robinson’s college career established him as one of the nation’s top pass rushers. He earned recognition as the top edge rusher in Maryland while at Quince Orchard High School, where he received a five-star rating and ranked 22nd nationally according to 247Sports.

His development has been slowed by previous injuries throughout his career.

The Maryland native’s absence would create a significant gap in Miami’s pass rush plans. The Dolphins had been working to establish one of the league’s more formidable edge rushing combinations with Robinson and Chubb starting together.

Miami’s coaching staff will await further medical evaluation to determine the timeline for Robinson’s return. The team’s depth at the position will be tested if he misses extended time.

The Dolphins continue their preseason preparations as they work toward their regular season opener.
