The Cleveland Browns announced that former Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders remains at the bottom of their depth chart heading into training camp. But former NFL MVP Joe Theismann believes the 23-year-old has what it takes to climb the ranks.

Sanders hasn’t taken snaps with the starting offense yet. He’s got a long summer ahead to prove himself.

The Browns quarterback situation has become one of the most watched storylines heading into camp. While other teams focus on integrating top picks like Cam Ward with the Tennessee Titans, Cleveland’s attention centers on whether Sanders can develop into a viable option.

Theismann offered strong praise for the Colorado product in a recent interview with Pro Football Network’s Alex Kennedy.

“I know he’s going to put the time in to learn—believe me, Shedeur is not the football player he is because of his last name. I think he’ll need to put the time in—the extra time in—to put the study in to be able to be the guy that’s a part of the team that the players will respect because of your work ethic, because of your knowledge of the system, because of your ability to make plays. That’s how you earn respect in this game, and I believe he’ll be able to do that.”

The former Washington quarterback and Super Bowl champion knows what it takes to succeed at the position.

Sanders needs to improve his pocket presence and decision-making speed. Those skills could determine whether he’s starting by midseason.

Getting advice from players like Theismann will help Sanders develop faster. The Browns hope that development translates to better quarterback play sooner rather than later.

Cleveland’s quarterback room remains unsettled heading into what could be a crucial season for the franchise.
