Tennessee’s quarterback situation continues to deteriorate as reports indicate Nico Iamaleava may be heading elsewhere. Sources close to the program suggest the former five-star recruit is seeking a $2 million increase in his NIL compensation.
ESPN’s Chris Low reports that Iamaleava’s representatives have been exploring options beyond Knoxville.
“But this is not the first time Iamaleava’s reps have talked to other schools over the last few months,” Low wrote.
While no official announcement has been made, expectations are growing that Iamaleava won’t be Tennessee’s starter this fall.
The quarterback showed glimpses of his potential last season, but Tennessee’s offense frequently stalled during critical moments. The Vols relied heavily on their defense, which ranked 6th nationally.
Former Tennessee quarterback Tyler Bray criticized Iamaleava’s impact on social media.
“57th in passing yds and 9th in rushing. Our defense ranked 6th. Think our defense had more to do with our success,” Bray posted.
Bray’s comments highlight running back Dylan Sampson’s contributions to the Vols’ offense last season.
The situation has drawn attention beyond college football circles. Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons weighed in, expressing concern about the direction of college football.
Iamaleava’s potential departure would mark a significant shift for a Tennessee program that had built its offensive plans around the sophomore quarterback.
