FOX Sports Announcer Calls Lane Kiffin Stupid Over Vanity Fair Interview image

Lane Kiffin is making his transition from Ole Miss to LSU official. The Tigers announced their new head coach signed a 7-year, $91 million contract to make the jump within the SEC.

Kiffin’s recent comments about Oxford haven’t sat well with everyone in college football.

Tim Brando fired back at Kiffin’s remarks in a Vanity Fair feature piece. The FOX Sports analyst took issue with how the Tigers coach described his recruiting challenges at Ole Miss.

The longtime coach talked about the recruiting setup in the deep south. He explained how those factors influenced his decision to leave.

“Kiffin also seems willing to indirectly invoke Ole Miss’s struggle to distance itself from symbols like the Confederate flag, Colonel Rebel, and the nickname ‘Ole Miss’ itself,” Vanity Fair’s Chris Smith wrote.

“When he was coaching there, Kiffin says, top recruits would tell him, ‘Hey, coach, we really like you. But my grandparents aren’t letting me move to Oxford, Mississippi.’ That doesn’t come up when you say Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Parents were sitting here this weekend saying the campus’s diversity feels so great: ‘It feels like there’s no segregation. And we want that for our kid because that’s the real world.'”

Kiffin tried to clarify his comments the next day.

“I just hope [my comment] comes across respectful to Ole Miss…. There are some things that I’m saying that are factual. They’re not shots.”

The population of Baton Rouge is about 51% Black and 36% white. Oxford is about 66% white, 26% Black.

Brando didn’t hold back during his response on WJOX in Birmingham on Wednesday.

“Stupid, arrogant, condescending and everything you never want to see in the leader of men,” Brando said about Kiffin.

The controversy won’t disappear quickly.

Ole Miss hosts Kiffin and LSU in Oxford on Saturday, Sept. 19. The primetime matchup will air on ESPN.
