The 2026 NFL Draft quarterback class fell short of expectations after several top prospects decided to return to school.
Arch Manning and Dante Moore now headline what could be a much stronger 2027 group.
Moore’s decision to stay at Oregon dealt a significant blow to this year’s class. The move also strengthens next year’s pool of talent.
Manning entered the season at Texas as a potential No. 1 overall pick for 2026. Now he’s setting his sights on that same spot in 2027.
“He’ll be regarded as the No. 1 quarterback prospect and perhaps the No. 1 overall player,” ESPN’s Matt Miller wrote on Thursday.
Moore could’ve been selected in the top two picks if he’d declared this year. Instead, he’s chosen to get more experience.
NFL scouts want quarterbacks with college seasoning. Twenty-five starts has become the baseline for success at the professional level.
“The decision to return to school is wise, as NFL scouts are adamant that professional success is linked to college experience,” Miller writes. “Moore has 20 career starts (15 this season plus five at UCLA in 2023) and is a prime candidate to be the No. 1 pick in 2027.”
Brendan Sorsby also passed on the draft. He transferred from Cincinnati to Texas Tech rather than turn professional.
“He’s loaded with potential and could very well be the next transfer quarterback to win a Heisman Trophy and be an early-round pick,” Miller writes.
Other players could emerge as contenders.
Trinidad Chambliss might stay in school another year if he gets his waiver approved. Sam Leavitt transferred from Arizona State to LSU and could develop into a prospect.
Surprise risers always emerge in quarterback classes too.
The 2027 group should be entertaining to follow as these players develop over the next season.
