Illinois head coach Bret Bielema watched former receiver Pat Bryant prepare for the Reese’s Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama.
In an exclusive interview with Chicago State of Mind Sports, Bielema discussed Bryant’s NFL potential.
“Pat is the definition of what I believe in, what we do. He’s a tough, smart, dependable guy. On the field, he probably has the ability to play inside and outside receiver and be a valuable special teams guy,” Bielema said.
The coach highlighted Bryant’s character and leadership qualities as key strengths.
“The essence he leads, the work ethic, the attitude. I think he’s getting married next month, just a very impressive young man. [He’s] somebody who’d be great to have in your [NFL] building,” Bielema said.
Bryant declared for the NFL draft in December, skipping Illinois’ Cheez-It Citrus Bowl victory over South Carolina.
His final season included a signature moment – a game-winning touchdown catch against Rutgers in Week 13.
“After much thought, prayer, and discussions with my family, I am proud to declare for the 2025 NFL draft,” Bryant announced. “This decision marks the next step in pursuing my dream, and I am ready for the challenges ahead.”
Bielema expects Bryant’s football IQ to translate well to the professional level.
“You don’t need to coach Pat Bryant up on too many things,” Bielema said. “He’s literally one of the most intelligent players I’ve ever coached. [It’s] gonna be a very bright future in the NFL for him.”
