The University of Michigan is challenging NCAA allegations in the Connor Stalions sign-stealing investigation. In a 137-page response document, Michigan claims the NCAA committed misconduct during its investigation and argues the alleged sign-stealing had “minimal relevance to competition,” Yahoo Sports reports.
The NCAA has not commented on Michigan’s response.
Jim Harbaugh, who left Michigan for the Los Angeles Chargers after winning the national championship, faces renewed scrutiny over the scandal.
Illinois head coach Bret Bielema highlighted past comments from Harbaugh about competitive integrity. In a video from Harbaugh’s San Francisco 49ers tenure, he emphasized the importance of being “above reproach.”
“You always wanted to be above reproach,” Harbaugh said. “Especially when you’re good. Because you don’t want people to come back and say, ‘Oh, they’re winning because they’re cheating.’ We want to be above reproach in everything and play by the rules. If you cheat to win, then you’ve already lost.”
Bielema responded on X: “Really…. Why did you leave? Was looking forward to playing but understand why you ran to the #NFL. See you in the future and can’t wait.”
The two coaches met once in 2022, with Michigan defeating Illinois 19-17 at Michigan Stadium. Illinois later beat Michigan 21-7 in Champaign during the 2023 season under interim head coach Sherrone Moore.
Illinois finished the 2023 season 10-3, securing its first bowl victory since 2011.
