Indiana announced that incoming freshman linebacker Jacob Savage will wear No. 21 for the 2026 season. The number choice pays tribute to Grammy Award-winning rapper 21 Savage.

The decision creates a memorable connection for a program fresh off its first national championship under head coach Curt Cignetti.

Savage earned consensus three-star status from recruiting services. ESPN ranked him as Kentucky’s No. 5 overall prospect. All four major recruiting services placed him among the nation’s top 80 linebackers.

His high school numbers were impressive. Savage recorded a program-record 511 tackles and 39 tackles for loss during his prep career.

He led Kentucky in tackles as a sophomore. The Paul Hornung Award recognized him as the state’s top high school football player as a senior.

Savage also earned KHSAA Class 6A District 6 Player of the Year honors. His team reached back-to-back state semifinal appearances.

The 18-year-old’s skills weren’t limited to defense. He accumulated 3,584 all-purpose yards and 65 touchdowns. That included 2,835 rushing yards and 749 receiving yards.

The rapper behind the jersey inspiration has made significant impact in hip-hop. 21 Savage’s hits include “A Lot,” “Rich Flex” and his feature on Post Malone’s “Rockstar.”

Savage’s number choice brings both personality and high expectations to Bloomington. The Hoosiers will look for him to contribute immediately after their championship season.
