Florida State’s soccer program celebrated its fifth national championship Monday night with a 1-0 victory over Stanford. But the congratulations from a famous alumnus came with a sting.
Jameis Winston, the former Seminoles quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner, posted a message on social media praising the soccer team’s achievement. He also took a shot at his old program.
Thank you @FSUSoccer for you consistently being our best football team over the years!
Winston’s jab wasn’t without merit.
Since 2014, FSU’s soccer program has captured five national titles. They’ve reached eight College Cups and made 26 straight NCAA Tournament appearances.
The team has also won five consecutive ACC Tournament championships. That consistency has made them one of college athletics’ premier programs.
Meanwhile, Mike Norvell’s football team went 2-10 this season and missed a bowl game for the second consecutive year. The Seminoles could’ve taken a spot in the Birmingham Bowl as a replacement team but declined.
Winston’s comment hits harder considering the football program hasn’t won a national championship since he led the team to the title in 2013. That’s more than a decade of waiting in Tallahassee.
FSU retained Norvell for 2025 despite the recent struggles.
The soccer team’s dominance provides a stark contrast to football’s decline. While one program celebrates championships, the other searches for answers.
For now, though, Tallahassee can celebrate sustained excellence from at least one of its teams.
