James Franklin continues his coaching search after being fired from Penn State in mid-October. The former Nittany Lions coach has drawn interest from multiple programs but appears to be weighing his options carefully.
Virginia Tech and Franklin are in early-stage negotiations, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
“Former Penn State coach James Franklin and Virginia Tech are in the early stages of talks, with some resolution on his candidacy expected in the coming days,” Thamel reported Saturday.
The Hokies are running a full search process. Sources indicate mutual interest between both parties, though no deal has been finalized.
Franklin’s deliberate approach suggests he’s in no rush to accept the first available position. The 53-year-old coach appears to have leverage in these discussions.
Arkansas also pursued Franklin aggressively but came up short. Inside Arkansas’s John Nabors reports the Razorbacks’ efforts didn’t gain traction.
“Arkansas wanted James Franklin. They pursued James Franklin. They had serious talks with James Franklin. They missed on James Franklin,” Nabors wrote.
Franklin has apparently decided against the Fayetteville opportunity.
Florida State may be Franklin’s preferred destination, according to On3’s Brett McMurphy. The situation creates an interesting dynamic with Virginia Tech’s timeline.
“Virginia Tech wants an answer from James Franklin, but he could have an eye on Florida State (if it opens),” McMurphy reported.
The Seminoles’ coaching situation remains stable after their 34-14 victory over Virginia Tech.
Franklin’s methodical approach has allowed him to evaluate multiple opportunities. His coaching search continues as programs work to fill their vacant positions before the recruiting cycle intensifies.
The former Penn State coach compiled a 69-32 record during his tenure in University Park before his dismissal.
