Ohio State announced wide receiver Jeremiah Smith is preparing for an even bigger season after his championship performance.
Smith caught 15 touchdowns last season and made the game-sealing play in the Buckeyes’ national championship victory over Notre Dame in January.
CBS Sports’ Will Backus has named Smith “the best player in college football.”
“Though the Heisman rarely goes to a wide receiver, Smith has the aura, media recognition and talent befitting college football’s top award,” Backus wrote. “It’s not hard to see him collecting at least 1,500 yards receiving and 20 touchdowns for the Buckeyes in 2025, especially with fellow top option Emeka Egbuka off to the NFL.”
LeBron James has also expressed his support for Smith following his breakout season.
Backus believes Smith will not only contend for the Heisman but could be a valuable option for sports bettors.
“He’s an unstoppable force and — so long as he meets expectations — he’ll be in New York by year’s end,” Backus wrote. “Smith is the smartest bet to win the Maxwell and Walter Camp Awards, as well. A +1400 bet to win the award according to FanDuel Sportsbook…”
The Buckeyes are looking to secure back-to-back championships.
Smith will need to exceed his previous performance to win the Biletnikoff Award, where he’s currently listed as “a clear favorite.”
His first opportunity comes in Week 1 when Ohio State hosts Texas in Columbus.
Smith faces significant expectations from his family, who prioritize winning above individual achievements.
In less than 100 days, the Buckeyes will begin their title defense against the Longhorns. Smith will attempt to apply everything he’s learned to improve his game even further.
