The Minnesota Vikings officially named JJ McCarthy their starting quarterback, and the second-year player delivered his best performance yet during Thursday’s joint practice with the New England Patriots.

McCarthy completed 14-of-16 passes with five touchdowns against New England’s first-team defense during 11-on-11 drills, according to Boston Herald Patriots reporter Andrew Callahan.

The performance came in both red zone and full-field periods. McCarthy also took two sacks during the session.

“The Patriots defense is getting shredded today,” Callahan reported from the practice field.

McCarthy Won’t Play Saturday

Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell plans to rest McCarthy during Saturday’s preseason game against the Patriots. The decision likely reflects confidence in the quarterback’s development after he saw action in last week’s game against the Houston Texans.

McCarthy’s next game action could come in Week 1 against the Chicago Bears.

The Patriots brought significant defensive talent to Thursday’s practice. Christian Barmore, Milton Williams, Keion White, and Christian Gonzalez all took reps against Minnesota’s starting offense.

“McCarthy has dropped a few dimes today, including 2 TDs,” Callahan wrote. “Good coverage, just better throws. But overall, the Vikings’ offense won these periods easily. Barmore had both sacks.”

Success Without Jefferson

The performance becomes more notable considering Justin Jefferson remains sidelined with a hamstring injury. The All-Pro wide receiver has been out for weeks.

McCarthy and Jefferson haven’t had much time to develop chemistry yet. Instead, the quarterback found success connecting with TJ Hockenson and Jordan Addison.

Patriots coach Mike Vrabel has built a reputation for creating difficult situations for young quarterbacks. McCarthy appeared unfazed by the pressure, showing poise that impressed observers.

He’s won at both high school and college levels throughout his career.

Thursday wasn’t just another practice session. It provided a glimpse of what the Vikings hope represents their future at the quarterback position.
