Florida hired Jon Sumrall as head coach after his successful run at Tulane, where he led the Green Wave to back-to-back American Athletic Conference championship games.
Sumrall started his head coaching career at Troy with a 23-4 record. He spent the past two seasons at Tulane, taking over from Willie Fritz.
The Green Wave reached the conference title game in both 2024 and 2025 under Sumrall. Tulane lost to Army in 2024 but defeated North Texas in 2025 to win the conference championship and earn a playoff berth.
The playoff run ended quickly with a 41-10 loss to Ole Miss.
Sumrall becomes the second straight Gators coach hired from Group of Five ranks. That pattern initially worried fans who remembered Billy Napier’s struggles.
Napier excelled at recruiting but couldn’t translate that talent into game day success. He left behind players who’ll form the core of Sumrall’s first team.
Sumrall’s strength lies in game day coaching and maximizing existing talent. That skillset should help him get more from the roster Napier assembled.
Key Transfer Additions
Florida added several significant transfers this offseason. Aaron Philo arrived from Georgia Tech and will compete with returning redshirt freshman Tramell Jones Jr. for the starting quarterback job.
Eric Singleton transferred from Auburn to bolster the receiving corps alongside returner Varnell Brown III.
The biggest addition is offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner from Georgia Tech. Faulkner nearly led the Yellow Jackets to an ACC championship game appearance in 2025.
Faulkner’s first move was convincing Philo to follow him to Florida. He succeeded.
If Philo wins the starting job, he could help elevate the program immediately. If Jones Jr. starts instead, Philo provides valuable mentorship and depth.
Either quarterback will benefit from having Jadan Baugh at running back. Baugh was one of the nation’s top freshmen last season and projects as one of the country’s best backs in 2026.
Defensive Foundation
Sumrall, a former linebacker at Kentucky, inherits defensive talent as well. LJ McCray, a five-star recruit, decided to stay under the new coaching staff.
That’s a smart decision given Sumrall’s track record developing defensive players.
McCray hopes for a strong sophomore season while helping the defense support the offense as it learns Faulkner’s system.
If the defense holds up and Faulkner’s offense clicks quickly, Florida has the talent to compete for an FBS playoff berth next season.
With Napier’s recruiting foundation, Sumrall could accomplish what athletic director Scott Strickland envisioned when he made the hire.
