KJ Ford, one of the nation’s top defensive ends in the 2026 class, is set to announce his commitment Friday at 8:30 p.m. ET. But the Duncanville (Texas) standout might have a surprise in store.

Ford previously narrowed his choices to Florida, Ohio State and Texas A&M last week.

However, On3 reported that Alabama has re-entered the picture and is now the favorite. The 6-foot-4, 245-pound edge rusher is rated among the top 100 prospects nationally.

“Big surprise tomorrow,” Ford posted to Twitter/X on Thursday.

The question remains whether Ford will stick to his original top three or commit to Alabama as a surprise addition.

Ford’s connection to Alabama isn’t entirely unexpected. The Crimson Tide was one of four schools where he took official visits, along with his previously announced finalists.

Alabama was also considered the frontrunner for five-star defensive end Anthony “Tank” Jones, who’s expected to commit soon. If Jones chooses elsewhere, Alabama might have shifted focus back to Ford.

What Ford Brings

Ford recorded 57 tackles, 16 tackles-for-loss and seven sacks as a junior at Duncanville.

The top programs have taken notice. Ford has collected more than 30 scholarship offers from college football’s elite programs.

247Sports evaluates Ford as a versatile defensive end who can play multiple roles:

“Well-rounded, classic defensive end with sneaky size and requisite length. May most appropriately embody a traditional three-point, 4-3 end, primarily aligned as a 7-tech. That said, likely a potentially scheme-versatile edge who could also provide valuable snaps as a hybrid two-point, 3-4 rusher.”

The scouting report highlights Ford’s point-of-attack strength and developing pass-rush skills.

“Uses leverage and sudden point-of-attack strength to affect the run game. Still developing consistent bend-and-dip flexibility, but flashes arc-running ability as a rusher.”

Ford showcased his abilities at the Under Armour Dallas Regional in February 2025, where evaluators noted his quickness and speed-to-power conversion.

“Projects to the high-major level as a potential multi-year starter with long-term pro upside.”

The commitment announcement will clarify whether Ford sticks with his announced finalists or springs the Alabama surprise he’s been hinting at on social media.

Ford’s decision caps what’s been a whirlwind recruitment for one of Texas’s top defensive prospects.
