The Texas Longhorns announced that two-sport athlete Jonah Williams will undergo shoulder surgery and miss the remainder of the 2026 baseball season. The sophomore safety and outfielder re-injured his shoulder diving for a ball in foul territory against USC Upstate on March 6.

That game turned out to be his final appearance of the season.

The announcement sparked debate among Texas fans and media about whether Williams should focus on one sport. Multiple injuries have shortened his last four semesters across both football and baseball.

Texas Baseball head coach Jim Schlossnagle dismissed speculation about Williams choosing one sport. According to Evan Vieth of Inside Texas, Schlossnagle confirmed Williams remains committed to both programs.

“He’s still a two-sport athlete,” Schlossnagle said. “100% supportive of him being a baseball player next January. I’m obviously super supportive of him being a football player.”

Schlossnagle defended the former five-star prospect against critics. “Everybody needs to get off his back. This guy loves Texas. He loves football and he loves baseball, and he’s all in on his teammates.”

Williams missed the first four baseball games this spring with a lingering hamstring injury. His role remained limited when he returned, but he performed well in eight games before the shoulder injury.

He hit .304 with two doubles and four RBIs in his limited action.

Williams graduated early from Ball H.S. in Galveston and arrived in Austin last spring as one of the nation’s top recruits. He made his debut on the diamond in 2025, appearing in 20 games and hitting .327 with a .765 OPS.

The outfielder recorded three doubles and ten RBIs in 55 at-bats during his freshman baseball season.

Williams transitioned to football following the 2025 baseball season. Both 247Sports and On3 ranked him as the top safety in his recruiting class.

The hamstring injury that carried over from baseball limited his football opportunities. Williams appeared in eight games, including Texas’s Citrus Bowl victory over Michigan.

Williams will likely miss all of spring camp following his shoulder procedure. He’s expected to be cleared for the start of the 2026 season and could emerge as a key contributor in new defensive coordinator Will Muschamp’s scheme.

The Longhorns are targeting a return to the College Football Playoff in 2026.
