LSU announced that quarterback Garrett Nussmeier’s injury during Wednesday’s practice was minor after social media reports sparked concerns about his status.
The New Orleans Advocate’s Wilson Alexander reported that Nussmeier’s injury was “just a tweak.”
“Rumors of a serious injury to LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier at a closed practice Wednesday took off on the internet, creating panic and fear within the Tigers’ fanbase,” Alexander wrote.
“Nussmeier did not suffer a major injury or have to be carted off the field, multiple sources told The Advocate. One source described the issue as ‘just a tweak’ and added Nussmeier was able to walk on his own.”
On3’s Shea Dixon confirmed that LSU’s decision to hold Nussmeier out was precautionary.
The injury occurred during standard offense versus defense drills. Sources told Dixon that Nussmeier wasn’t carried off the field as some reports suggested.
Instead, he walked off before the next play.
“During Wednesday’s practice, Nussmeier was involved in what one source described as ‘normal football stuff’ during offense vs. defense drills, adding that Nussmeier was not ‘carried off the field,’ as reported, but rather walked it off ahead of starting the next play before LSU head coach Brian Kelly told Nuss to just sit it out for the rest of the practice,” Dixon wrote.
Head coach Brian Kelly made the call to sideline his starter for the remainder of practice. Multiple sources described Kelly’s decision as strictly precautionary.
Nussmeier has additional time to recover this week before LSU’s next game.
The Tigers avoided what could’ve been a significant setback for their 2025 season. Nussmeier is projected as one of the top quarterback prospects for the 2026 NFL draft.
