Wayne State announced that Tyrone Wheatley has resigned as head football coach after three seasons. The former Michigan star and NFL running back struggled to build winning programs at both Wayne State and Morgan State.
“As head football coach, I accept full responsibility for the program and the standards that come with this role,” Wheatley said in a statement released by the school. “After thoughtful reflection, I have decided to step down, believing this is the right decision for the student athletes and the university.”
Wheatley compiled a 5-28 record at Wayne State over three seasons. The Warriors went 0-11 in 2025.
His tenure at Morgan State from 2019 to 2021 produced similar results. Wheatley posted a 5-18 mark with the Bears. The 2020 season was canceled due to COVID-19.
Wheatley’s college head coaching career ends with a 10-46 overall record across both programs.
The former running back starred at Michigan before playing eight NFL seasons. He ran through Big Ten defenses in Ann Arbor but couldn’t translate that success to the sidelines as a head coach.
Wayne State Athletic Director Erika Wallace thanked Wheatley for his commitment to student athletes. The university announced that Terrence Isaac Sr. will lead the program moving forward.
“We are fortunate to have someone of Terrence Isaac’s caliber to guide our program forward,” Wallace said.
The resignation caps a coaching career that never gained traction at the college level. Wheatley’s playing credentials couldn’t overcome the challenges of building competitive programs at two different schools.
