Michigan announced that true freshman Bryce Underwood will start at quarterback against New Mexico on Saturday night. The 18-year-old will make program history in the process.

Front Office Sports reported that Underwood becomes the youngest starting quarterback in Michigan’s 146-year football history.

“Today, at 18 years and 11 days old, (Bryce Underwood) becomes the youngest starting QB in the 146-year history of Michigan football.”

The Wolverines are entering 2025 with a completely different roster after Jim Harbaugh’s departure and multiple players leaving for the NFL. Underwood represents the biggest change at the most important position.

Underwood was the top recruit in the nation’s 2025 class. He’s reportedly signed a $12.5 million NIL deal with Michigan.

The previous record holder was Rick Leach in 1975, according to research by Brandon Koretz. Leach was a dual-sport athlete who earned All-American honors in both football and baseball.

Underwood finished his high school career with 2,509 passing yards and 32 touchdowns against six interceptions. He also rushed for over 600 yards with six touchdowns.

The 14th-ranked Wolverines will rely on Underwood’s dual-threat ability as they begin the season. His debut comes at Michigan Stadium in front of the home crowd.

Michigan’s quarterback situation changed dramatically after last season’s departures. Underwood enrolled early and won the starting job during fall camp.

He’ll make his college debut Saturday night against New Mexico as the Wolverines look to start the season strong under their new leadership.
