Michigan State needs a quarterback to turn around its struggling program.
The Spartans will likely target the transfer portal to find their answer. One potential option could be Austin Mack, a backup at Alabama who hasn’t announced his plans yet.
A coaching connection might help Michigan State’s chances.
Former Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald replaced Jonathan Smith as head coach. He’s expected to hire Nick Sheridan as offensive coordinator, according to The Athletic’s Manny Navarro.
“That could open the door for Crimson Tide backup Mack, who has yet to announce his plans for next season,” Navarro writes.
Sheridan currently works as an assistant under Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer. That relationship with Mack could prove valuable in transfer recruiting.
Mack was a four-star recruit coming out of high school. He’s struggled to find playing time behind Alabama’s depth chart.
The quarterback position remains the most important spot in college football. Getting the right passer can completely change a program’s trajectory.
Transfer portal recruiting moves quickly. Coaches don’t have months to build relationships like they do with high school prospects.
Having a familiar face on staff makes a difference in these situations.
Mack faces limited opportunities to start at Alabama given the competition. A move to Michigan State could offer him the chance to compete for immediate playing time.
The Spartans need help at multiple positions, but quarterback is their biggest priority heading into the offseason.
