Michigan linebacker Ernest Hausmann announced his medical retirement from football over the weekend.

The team captain made the announcement on social media after missing the Wolverines’ final three games of the season.

“From Uganda to America, with a full heart, I’m officially medically retiring from football,” Hausmann wrote on Facebook. “This game has shaped me, but now it’s time to focus on my true purpose on this earth full time. I’ll be finishing my degree at the University of Michigan.”

Hausmann earned All-Big Ten honors this season with 68 tackles and 5.5 tackles for loss.

The linebacker began his college career at Nebraska before transferring to Ann Arbor three years ago.

He totaled 203 tackles during his college career.

Hausmann was projected as a potential NFL draft pick or undrafted free agent signing for 2025. The retirement ends those professional prospects as he focuses on completing his degree.

“Thank you to everyone who has supported me on this journey,” Hausmann added in his post. “The best is still ahead.”

The medical retirement removes one of Michigan’s top defensive players from the roster. Hausmann’s absence was noticeable during the team’s final games, though the program provided no explanation at the time.

His journey from Uganda to becoming a team captain and All-Big Ten performer at Michigan represents one of the more compelling stories in college football this season.
